More information

Candle wax massage is a special type of oil massage. The focus of the treatment is stimulation of the skin. Liquefied and heated oil substances are used, i.e. the massage medium is the liquid wax of special candles. The aim of the massage is an increased sense of well-being as well as profound physical and mental relaxation.

We know Abhyanga massage, which comes from the Indian tradition, and which is known in the Western world as "anointing of the body". In Abhyanga, usually a vegetable oil is heated and distributed over the body by the massage movements. Teas and other substances may also be applied. Spa treatments play the more prominent role, but occasionally Abhyanga massage is also employed for medical purposes. Candle wax massage, on the other hand, uses several elements to induce a deep state of relaxation: massage movements, scent, a comforting atmosphere, the temperature of the massage medium and the substance itself.

Candle wax and massage

In candle wax massage, we do not heat just any candle and spread the wax all over the client. This would cause pain as well as physical and mental blockages. Specific types of wax are used for the application, specially developed for this purpose This kind of wax is also known as massage wax or massage candle. It contains certain natural waxes, massage oils and special fragrances. The candle wax must be heated so that it liquefies before it can be applied to the client's body. Because they contain mostly natural materials, the oils are kind to the skin and can be applied easily.

The practical application of candle wax massage

The practical application of candle wax massage is similar to oil massage and some consider it to be a form of this type of massage. The candle wax is distributed over the entire body with gentle hand movements. What kinds of strokes are used depends on what one wishes the massage to achieve. Generally, stroking and kneading movements are used to improve circulation, reduce stress and loosen muscles. The wax for the massage is heated to 50 to 60 degrees so that the client experiences a comforting warmth that does not feel too hot. The candle wax massage can be carried out as soon as the wax is hot because it will be both warm enough and liquid at this point. Needless to say that the candles have been tested for dermatological safety. They do not contain any colourant or preservative, nor synthetic perfumes or mineral oils.

Clients who receive a candle wax massage for the first time may experience the contact with the wax as strange and even feel a kind of initial shock. This is where the massage practitioner has to be supportive. S/he needs to spread the wax with consistent and rhythmic movements so that the wax is distributed immediately after touching the body and not simply poured over the client. This shortens the moment of the first skin contact, and the comforting heat is spread instantly across a larger area.

Holistic relaxation with candle wax massage

The warm liquid substance, the special fragrances and the skilled strokes of the masseur/se induce a state of profound physical and mental relaxation. All parts of your being can relax. You will reach the deepest level of relaxation if you fully focus on the hot wax and consciously feel its effect on your skin. If you opt for a candle wax massage, make sure you do not mistake it for an oil massage. The application method of a candle wax massage is somewhat similar to that of an oil massage, but a relatively large amount of oil is used for that. This makes it much more "slippery", which is not to everybody's liking. Candle wax massage is suitable for anyone who easily relaxes with warmth but does not want to be confronted with too much oil.
